Killzone

Ever since Bungie came around and created that Halo game that launched a million Xboxes, Sony and their PS2 gang have been scrambling to make a high quality multiplayer first person shooter. It's arriving in November, just around the time Halo 2 is coming out, and along with Half-Life 2 and Doom III, will have plenty of competition for dollars.

Developed by Guerilla Software in conjunction with Sony development teams in both American and Europe, Killzone's setting is neither science fiction nor historical -- instead, it blends inspiration from modern conflicts from this century and tosses them into the very near future.

You'll be fighting through trenches a la WWI, stage city sieges like WWII and fight through the jungle a la Vietnam. All of the weaponry is based on today's arsenal, with over 21 weapons, as well as manned turrets and grenades. The armor designs seem to borrow generously from the anime war film Jin Roh, with their gas masks and glow in the dark goggles -- which, to anyone vaguely familiar with that movie, will know is just incredibly freaking cool. There are also four different kinds of characters, with focus on varying amounts strength and stealth.

The term "epic conflict" is tossed around a lot these days, although Killzone seems to be fitting the bill quite nicely. You are a member of the ISA, an organization of planetary colonies that have banded together for the sake of protection. The bad guys are the Helghast, a separatist military faction who's all about making your life (and others) a war torn hell.

With over 11 levels in total, there's an emphasis on a single player mode, although Killzone is also focusing largely on multiplayer. Since Sony was shortsighted enough to not include four controller ports in its system, the aim is primarily on killing over the Internet, with up to 12 players on a broadband connection. Sony has needed another app besides Socom and Final Fantasy XI to sell its network adapter, so this might finally be their chance. Otherwise, only a two player split screen mode is available.

Due to its technical prowess, the Xbox has been considered "The System" for first-person shooters. If Guerilla can make their baby run smoothly, then Sony gamers will finally have some killing action to call their own.

Features:

First person action in the near future

12 players over broadband connection

4 playable characters, with a total of 27 different weapons

Music from Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus
