Kunoichi
The number of
people who actually had the patience to fight through the final battle
of Sega's PS2 Shinobi probably doesn't break into the double digits, but
it suffices to say that ninja Hotsuma whipped evil freak Hiruko into the
next dimension. But in grand tradition, the dreaded forces of evil are
back, and now the female ninja known as Kunoichi is summoned to fight a
new legion of demonic creations in the sequel to last year's action
title.
While Shinobi had marvelous, extraordinaily tight gameplay, the level
designs were the textbook definition of bland, and the difficulty often
delved into the realms of utter depravity. Sega has vowed to correct
these mistakes by toning down the challenge and introducing new levels
that take place on moving trains and atop fighter jets, perhaps in a nod
the 16-bit Genesis games. The Tate system, where your strength increased
temporarily based on the number of combos you performed, is being
enhanced to include a wider array of attacks. The magic scrolls, before
limited to temporary invincibility or other

barely useful effects, are
being replaced with a Chakra gauge to allow the use of more powerful
spells. And although nothing has been confirmed, it's a well known fact
that games with canine companions are always awesome, so here's hoping
the ninja dog from Shadow Dancer will make a comeback.
In a flashback
to the early 90s, the ninja action genre is once again prevalent, with
Kunoichi going head-on with Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden. But Sega has a knack
for taking good ideas, removing what didn't work and refining them into
them jewels - go see the Jet Set Radio games. If Overworks does this
right, Kunoichi will be the must-have action game this fall.
Features:
-Flip out on legions of nasty demons all over Japan
-Enhanced combat systems featuring unlimited combos, stealth dashes, and
a magic meter.
