Ratchet:
Deadlock
Ratchet
and Clank won the hearts of many PS2 gamers back in the series first
release in the fourth quarter of the year 2002. Since then, the series has been a great success for Insomniac Games. After the third
game’s release, Insomniac decided to approach the Ratchet series in a
new way with its latest installment, Ratchet Deadlock. This time,
“Ratchet and Clank are captured while investigating the disappearance
of several famous heroes. The two discover that the missing heroes
(including themselves) have been abducted by a deranged media mogul
named Gleeman Vox, who intends to use them as contestants on an
underground reality combat show.
It
doesn't take Vox long to realize that Ratchet is the most promising
contestant the show has ever seen. Vox subjects Ratchet to a series of
deadly battles and elaborate games of death, much to the delight of the
show's enormous audience. To keep himself and his friends alive, Ratchet
has no choice but to participate in the games and keep driving up the
show's ratings with spectacular victories – at least until he can
figure out a way to break free from Vox's control and the explosive
Deadlock collar around his neck.”
Just
from the story alone, it seems pretty obvious that Ratchet Deadlock will
be a fast paced game with explosive combat. Somewhere down the line,
Insomniac must have decided
that Ratchet needed a little more attitude and by the looks of things so far,
they have succeeded in doing so. Deadlock is all about blowing the crap
out of things but with a little twist. You can’t just go in and kill
everything in sight, strategy seems to be a necessity if you want to
win.
If
co-op play is your game, then you will be happy to know that Deadlocked
features co-op gameplay in both multiplayer story mode and single-player
mode. This time, there is a new interesting weapon system that gives
players the ability to choose their own personal and unique way to power
up their weapons.

This
affects both capabilities and functionality which leaves players with
thousands of mod capabilities. This sounds very promising and could give
an extra boost to the already awesome gameplay that previous Ratchet and
Clank games had to offer.
Another
interesting feature is squad-based gameplay which allows players to kick
the competition’s ass by strategically commanding their allied bots
through explosive battles. To enhance that, each bot will have its
own personality and traits. Textures and body parts are also
customizable by choice of the player. If the final result turns out
anywhere near as good as it sounds, then we are all in for a special
treat.
Levels
do not have to be beaten in any order so this gives players a lot more
freedom when participating in a mission. You cannot go wrong with
non-linear gameplay right? All Single player levels will also be
available to use when you're playing a multiplayer game. With Insomniac’s
new approach to the game, players will constantly be rewarded with
health packs, weapons, armor etc. I wonder if the series’ new approach
will appeal to all Ratchet fans because it is obviously a lot more
tournament/sports orientated. Does this mean a lot less frequent cut
scenes that we all grew to love from previous Ratchet games? No
matter how you look at it, it just does not seem feasible that
Deadlock’s story will be as compelling as the Ratchet and Clank
series. However, there should not be any doubting Insomniac games
because they always seem to pull through and keep us fans happy.
