Those who have been following Adult Swing on the Cartoon Network of late have probably had a chance to check out Samurai Champloo by now.  In a short amount of time, the anime has become quite the hit, swiftly make its way to DVD in North America.  Now Bandai is working on a game based on the show, hoping to help capture some of the unique elements that make the anime so successful, and translate them into a PlayStation 2 game.

For those out of the loop, Samurai Champloo is an anime created by Shinichiro Watanabe, creator of Cowboy Bebop.  Set in 19th Century Japan, the show manages to combine samurai with hip-hop music.  As far as the game is concerned, it will be a brawler at heart.  However, as a means of making the experience a tad different from the norm in the genre,

rhythm will have a role in how the game is played.  So, as players try to unload combos on their opponents, the moves will ideally follow the rhythm of the music in the game.

As players get into more and more of a zone, they will eventually enter “Tate” mode. Here one will face off against a single enemy, and if the player performs well they will move onto “Trance” mode.  When this happens everyone turns into silhouettes and players have to take on legions of enemies at once.  If they survive this, new items and weapons become available.

Over the course of the game, players will slowly collect more and more songs, which can be played while fighting.  Since combat is so closely tied to music, each different track has specific moves associated with it.  In time, players will learn to mix and match these songs, adjusting their attacks as they see fit.

While simply running under the name Samurai Champloo will surely get fans of the anime interested in the game, it’s important to note that this game is a side story, and doesn’t follow the plot of the anime series.  The cast is primarily of original characters, with only important main characters from the series appearing in the game.  Nonetheless, it looks like Bandai is trying to recreate the unique feel from the anime in this game.  Hopefully the end result will pan out.
