Samurai Western

Since Red Sun, starring Charles Bronson, came out in the early 1970s, the thought of putting a samurai in the Old West has slowly wedged itself into public consciousness as being a pretty nifty idea.  The latest attempt at recreating this sword-swinging, gun-slinging je ne sais quoi is Samurai Western, the third installment in the Way of the Samurai series, from Acquire.

The game will start off in a fairly traditional fashion for something set in the Old West, as a mysterious man in foreign clothes comes moseying into town armed only with a sword.  The samurai’s name is Goujirou Kiryuu, and he has come across the Pacific in search of his brother.

Samurai Western will step away from the mixture of action and adventure found in previous games of the series, instead choosing to focus on being a purely action-oriented title this time out.  All of this will take place over the game’s 16 stages, while players use their Bushido Senses to anticipate incoming gunfire, allowing them to dodge bullets.  Like previous Way of the Samurai games, Samurai Western will provide quite a bit of replay value, as the game has a number of unlockable options in it.  Players will be able to unlock 25

additional characters, 70 accessories, and 20 weapons as they play through the game.  Also of interest is that instead of playing purely as a samurai, it will also be possible to take on the role of a gunman if one likes.

Up to this point, the Way of the Samurai series has been a bit hit and miss in terms of bring everything together for a top notch game experience.  Hopefully this time Acquire will be able to iron out Samurai Western, addressing issues that were raised in regards to the game’s predecessors.
