Seven Samurai 20XX

When people start citing some of their favorite international directors, it doesn’t take long before Akira Kurosawa’s name gets mentioned.  With the sheer body of work he produced in his lifetime it’s no wonder thanks to titles like Ran, Yojimbo, and Rashomon.  Now quite possibly his most well-known film, Seven Samurai, is getting made into a game.  However it isn’t a direct retelling of the story set in feudal Japan; instead it takes place in the future where seven samurai must be gathered to defend the last settlement of humans on the planet from the beasts outside.

The mere mention of the premise of this game and the artistic liberties Dimps appears to be taking with the title are more than enough to give ardent fans of the movie a massive coronary.  However, they are working with Kurosawa Productions and the director’s son, Hisao, to help ensure the game remains true to the spirit of the movie, despite the abrupt change in landscape for the game.  Also being brought onto the project is composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who won an Academy Award for his musical score in The Last Emperor.  With big guns like these being brought in on the project it really seems like Dimps and Sammy want to make a very good title, not just milk a popular name as some company’s may be tempted to do.
