Shadow of the Colossus

When ICO came out for the PlayStation 2 a few years back, the game turned a lot of heads, as it presented an interesting, new way to tackle puzzle-laden adventure games.  Since that time, a lot of people have been wondering when the developers of this masterpiece would return with something new.  Well, the development team is back, and they’ve got a new game pitting players against a variety of menacing giants called Shadow of the Colossus.

Simply from looking at the images available for the game thus far, there are quite a few similarities that can be seen between this new game and ICO.  The character art bares a resemblance to that of ICO, as does the lonesome, moody tone of Shadow of the Colossus.

The game will start off with the main character placing the lifeless body of a girl on his horse, and traveling for several days to a great temple where he lays her to rest on an altar.  However, upon doing this, a mysterious voice calls out to the young lad, telling him that there is a way to return the girl to like.  In order to do so, the game’s hero must travel the ancient

lands in search of the various colossi that have been banished there, and defeat them.  Like ICO, traversing the world of Shadow of the Colossus will be a solitary journey, as there aren’t any other people to meet, or that can help in your quest.  You simply wander the land in search of these creatures.

Upon finding a colossus, the game won’t simply be an action-oriented affair where players mindlessly hack up their enemy.  Instead, there will actually be quite a bit of puzzle solving.  Players will need to find the weak point of the colossus, and then find a way to reach it.  This will usually

necessitate climbing up the beast, and as players traverse its body it will be like trying to find one’s way through a maze, avoiding dead ends and obstacles.  All the while, there will be the constant danger of the colossus trying to shake the player off of its body.

Interestingly, Shadow of the Colossus has been in development since work wrapped up on ICO.  As such, it is quite obvious that the developers are putting a lot of effort into this new project, though it shouldn’t come as a surprise given that they spent four years making ICO.  At the moment Shadow of the Colossus is slated for a Japan release later this year, and a European release has also been confirmed.  However, there is no word on when or if it will be hitting North American shores.  SCEA took a chance on ICO, hopefully they’ll do so with this game.
