Tales
of Legendia
When
Tales of Symphonia was released for the Gamecube last Summer, the game
was quite well-received by RPG fans. It’s hard to blame them, though, as the way the Tales franchise
blends role-playing stories, exploration, and character development with
a combat system more akin to a fighting game is quite appealing. For those who missed the boat, though, don’t worry, as a new
Tales game is on the way for the PlayStation 2, called Tales of Legendia.
On
this merry not-so-little tale, players will follow the story of Senel
Coolidge and his sister Shirley, who have been adrift at see on a tiny
boat for quite some time.When
things begin to look particularly grim, an island miraculously appears
on the horizon.As they get
nearer to it they realize that what they’re looking at is in fact a
large ship named Legacy.Now
it is up to them to figure out the mystery of this vessel, and whoever
built it.
While
the visuals are maintaining their highly cartoon-like motif, what will
particularly stand out about them is that Kazuto Nakazawa, the artist
responsible for the animated portions of Kill Bill Vol. 1, did the art
for the graphics.
What
will be key in getting RPG fans’ attention, though, is how the game
battle system works.So
far, Namco has only released a tiny bit of information about it.Of course, the system has its own handy-dandy name, which seems
to be a tradition with the Tales series. In this case the battle system is called X-LiMBS, the Crossover
Linear Motion Battle

System. There’s no word on what this system involves, outside of it
being a more fighting game-oriented sort of system.Hopefully by E3 we’ll be able to learn a little bit more about
what makes the battles here different from that found in previews Tales
titles.
Up
to this point, the Tales franchise has not disappointed.Considering that Tales of Legendia has a number of people
from Namco’s Soul Calibur team onboard, one can only assume this is a good
thing given the fighting game elements in this game.Whatever the case, we’ve got a long wait ahead of us, as the
game is slated for a Winter 2006 release. With any luck, Tales of Legendia will prove to be just as much
fun as its predecessors have.
