Tekken 5

Tekken.

The name stirs up fond memories of trash talking and controller throwing. There’s something pure about getting so ticked off that the game didn’t recognize your counter that you end up going to the store to buy a replacement controller (maybe driving while PO’d isn’t such a hot idea, but it certainly saved some friendships and kept the police from having to make a house call). With the pending Tekken 5 due in March, I’m already making preparations to find out where the cheapest replacement controllers can be picked up.

At this point, we can verify that besides the new characters: Asuka, Raven, and Feng Wei, we will see the returns of Hworang (prepare to be annoyed by my complete b lack of blocking), Jin, Kazuya, Paul (Phoenix-smasher… hehehe), Lee, Jack-5, Xiaoyu, King, Christie, Law, Steve, Marduk, Nina (another favorite), Yoshimitsu, and Julia have been verified. Fans of Heihachi, Lei Wu Long, and Kuma (I’d mention Panda or Joey, but seriously, they’re nobody’s favorite) hopefully won’t be disappointed, but from the sounds of the story I wouldn’t hold my breath, fans of diaper-clad fighters.

So far, the stills show some pretty varied looking atmospheres ranging from an Antarctic setting complete with penguins, to grassy areas, to the requisite skylines and underground fight-clubs. The stills look promising, but then again, they wouldn’t post terrible looking pictures now would they? Like most previous Tekken games, it looks as though there’s going to be a lot of hidden goodies to unlock, so those shut-ins and perfectionists are going to be really happy.

Game Description:

After the completion of The King of Iron Fist Tournament 4, a fierce battle between father and son unfolded at Mishima Zaibatsu headquarters. Jin emerges as the victor in this battle, and continues to defeat Heihachi, his grandfather – but spares both Kazuya and Heihachi’s lives in honor of his mother who loved peace. Soon after Jin’s departure, a swarm of Jacks arrive at Honmaru, and begin to attack Heihachi and Kazuya – and in order to escape, Kazuya thrusts Heihachi into the swarm of Jacks. A great explosion destroys Honmaru, and a man watching from afar reports “Heihachi Mishima is dead.”

While many presume the death of Heihachi Mishima will end the reign of Mishima

Zaibatsu, an announcement is made for the fifth King of Iron Fist Tournament, with an unknown replacement to Heihachi leading the organization. The fight begins.
