Dead or Alive 4

Few fighting game series have been better than Tecmo’s Dead or Alive. Surprisingly, when the current console generation hit the market four years ago, Japanese developer Tecmo decided to shun the Japanese-based Sony and its PS2 for American Microsoft and its fledgling Xbox as the platform that it would launch its newest fighting game, Dead or Alive 3. And the result was one of the most impressive (if a bit shallow with its features) and addictive fighting games that came to the current console generation. That was followed up by the next Dead of Alive game, Dead or Alive Ultimate, another Xbox-exclusive that repackaged previous Dead or Alive titles and added online support through Xbox Live.

Now, with the dawn of another console generation on the horizon, Tecmo is renewing its support for Microsoft and throwing the cold shoulder Sony’s way with the announcement of Dead or Alive 4 as an Xbox 360 launch title.

Fans of the series will be pleased with the return of their favorite characters (and a few newcomers) and usual solid fighting game flair that is standard in the Dead or Alive franchise. From the early screenshots, Dead or Alive 4 is going to be an absolutely gorgeous game — as is to be expected from Tecmo and Team Ninja. But it’s the online play that should bring a whole new level of gaming “wow!” to the Xbox 360, which will need it to gain an early advantage over the PS3 with a strong lineup of titles such as the can’t-miss-being-a-hit Dead or Alive 4.

Microsoft said to expect the best launch lineup in the history of console gaming, and with games like Dead or Alive 4 part of the initial tsunami of Xbox 360 games, we skeptics just might start believing the confident claim that Microsoft will indeed slam the gaming realm with the mother of all launches.
