Dead Rising

You’re photojournalist Frank West, caught in the Williamette Mall, trapped and surrounded by a massive horde of zombies. What do you do? Everything is literally at your disposal to defeat the walking dead, and you’ll get the story of a lifetime — if you can somehow survive the onslaught.

Although it sounds like the next Dawn of Dead movie, it’s actually Dead Rising, exclusively for the Xbox 360 from Capcom. On the show floor of E3 2006, it was nearly impossible to find a kiosk available to play Dead Rising on without a long wait. It was definitely one of the most popular games at this year’s E3, and with good reason. The action sandbox game looks to be one of the more promising upcoming Xbox 360 titles.

West takes refuge in the mall, only to discover he’s got a battle against literally wave after wave of zombie in order to escape with his life. The most amazing aspect of Dead Rising is the absolutely incredible amount of converging zombies that can be onscreen at once using

“swarm technology.” – literally dozens. Graphically, the game is a beauty to behold, even more impressive when the screen is filled to the brim with frightening zombies.

It definitely was one of the more eye-catching titles at E3 2006. Filled with a gleefully outrageous amount of violence, gore and heart-pounding action, Dead Rising will be a roller coaster ride from beginning to end.

Another great aspect of Dead Rising is that you can use any weapon-like instruments found in the mall (axes, chain saws, shovels, baseball bats, golf clubs, bowling balls, cash registers, frying pans and lawn mowers, to name a few).

Time in Dead Rising is dynamic, going noticeably from morning to night, and that actually plays a part in the gameplay. As the sun retires and the world becomes dark with night, the zombies are actually more powerful. When the sun’s shining bright, they act more lethargic. And certain key moments can be missed in “real time” that can affect how well you can stave off the always-impending attacks of the living undead.

You’re not the only survivor in the game, as you’ll run into other NPCs that help unravel the game’s story. And just because you’re at the mall doesn’t mean the gaming environment is small. There’s a huge environment to explore both inside and outside the mall. Certainly, Dead Rising was one of the better-received titles at E3 2006 and could be a big hit in the late summer.

Dead Rising’s gameplay offers a different and fresh approach to sandbox gaming (horror survival instead of the anti-hero gone wild) as you’ll literally be fighting off horde after horde of attacking flesh-eating zombies. If E3 is any indication, the game will be tons of fun and definitely looks like it will be one of the better second-generation Xbox 360 titles.
