Breakdown

First-person action games, talk about a hit-and-miss genre in console gaming.  It seems for every King’s Field we get, there’s a small army of games that are pure crap in the genre (Maken X instantly springs to mind).  This doesn’t seem to have phased Namco, though, as they have a game for this sub-genre in the works for the Xbox with Breakdown.

The game follows one Derrick Cole as he finds himself trapped in a laboratory with no recollection  to his past.  No he must find his way out of there and find out who he was.  Complicating the matter is that he has been imbued with special powers, and as luck would have it his captors have similar abilities.  So it’s going to be an uphill battle for Derrick to get out of the installation as he is forced to lock horns with all manner of super-soldier in Breakdown.

Looking at the images made public thus far, the game’s art is very similar to that found in the Tekken series in terms of character design, with moody environments and some very nice effects, taking advantage of the Xbox’s graphic abilities.  But there’s more to a game than a pretty face.  We’ll get to see just how well it plays when Breakdown hits store shelves in early 2004.
