Far
Cry: Instincts
Whenever
the idea of a game being ported pops up, many of the people whose task
it is to write about games get a shiver. Now sometimes it’s because of excitement, as the platform the
port is headed to seems like such a fit that no wrong can possibly be
done.However, much of the
time the shiver is more a reflex to a wave of fear, trepidation,
vertigo, and just a touch of nausea as memories of countless passed
ports flash through our minds.With
the track record of game ports, especially PC to console ports, being as
bad as it is it’s only natural for game writers to instinctively be a
tad apprehensive when a new port is announced. In spite of this, UbiSoft has decided to set forth undaunted, as
they prepare to port their popular PC FPS Far Cry to the Xbox.
The
usual mix of combat tactics will be available to players as they get the
option to set traps, use vehicles, attach from afar, or getting up close
and personal with the enemy.On
top of this will be Xbox Live support, a must for any self-respecting
FPS on the Xbox.What is
particularly interesting, though, is that players will be able to create
their own maps to play on and that these maps will be useable on Xbox
Live as well.

Looking
at the number of extras UbiSoft has planned for the Xbox version of Far
Cry, this port really gives the sense that the company is trying to make
the title into something special and not a half-assed rush job of a port
to make a few bucks.The
biggest challenge will obviously be to keep the graphical splendour that
Far Cry was known for on the PC as intact as possible on the Xbox, but
even if this doesn’t happen it seems there’s a decent chance that
the plans for the gameplay could pick up the slack.
