Samurai Showdown V

Remember when SNK was first getting into the business of making 2D fighting games?  It was an interesting ride, as the company tried to find its legs, producing games like World Heroes, Art of Fighting, and Fatal Fury.  In time, though, SNK found its rhythm, and we started to see some very interesting series emerge.  One of the earliest ones to hit the scene was Samurai Showdown, with its fancy, yet familiar fighting moves, spiffy visuals, and the game’s departure from fist fighting in favor of swords, spears, and so forth.  Now the series is making its way to the Xbox with Samurai Showdown V, an improved home edition of the 2003 arcade rendition of the game.

Of all the features in the game, the one that will likely get the most mileage is Samurai Showdown V’s ability to play online via Xbox Live.  There’s no word yet as to what exact features and game modes will be available for online play, but the simple fact that it will allow players to compete in such a fashion is just what Xbox-owning fighter fans want to know.

With that, the numbers game also plays a role in a fighting game, as each title tries to outdo the competition in terms of the number of fighters, game modes, special moves, and such.  For Samurai Showdown V, players will have a roster of 26 characters to choose from, which includes fourteen that are new to the franchise.  Meanwhile, the game will also have

23 combo moves, with 8 new ones included in the mix.  One other thing that the series has become known for over the years are the various gauges at players disposal that, when fully charged, can be used to unload special attacks.  That being said, the Rage Gauge will be making a return to do these aforementioned high-powered attacks.  On top of this, the game will also include what is called Spirit Strength that, when used, allows the game to temporarily go into slow mo.

In terms of making appearances on the home consoles, it’s been a while since we’ve seen Samurai

Showdown, though it is hardly surprising when you consider the sheer glut of installments that made their way to systems during the 32-bit era.  After the long hiatus, the biggest question will be whether or not fighting game fans will be interested in Samurai Showdown V when it is released this Fall.
