When it comes to space shooters making their way to consoles, if you’re a fan of the genre you need to own a Playstation 2, with titles like Gradius V and R-Type Final lurking in its library, as well as games like DoDonPachi Daioujou for those inclined to import.  For those who only own an Xbox, but like a good ol’ fashioned shoot ‘em up now and then, all that could be done is wait and hope.  Now Playlogic is doing something about that with their space shooter, Xyanide, for the Microsoft console.

Players will take control of Drake, a star fighter pilot on an escort mission to take the witch Aguira, recently convicted for all manner of atrocities by the Judges of Mardar, to be executed.  En route, the convoy collides with an asteroid rich with Xyanide, a mineral that can make one’s thoughts a reality.  Of course Aquira uses this as an opportunity to escape, manifesting a number of worlds full of organic and mechanical beasts that must be navigated in order to stop the witch.

There will be six of these worlds in total, each done fully in 3D.  To better deal with these environments, the player’s ship will be able to morph between being wholly organic, wholly

mechanical, or a hybrid of the two, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, collecting power-ups and special weapons along the way.  This should come in handy while taking on the more than 50 different types of enemy crafts and 15 mid-bosses and bosses in the game.  There will also be multiple paths in the game that players can discover while traversing the levels.  For those hoping for Xbox Live support, you’re in luck, as the game will receive downloadable content and there will also be a leader board so that players can compare scores against one another.

Xbox fans have been starved for a good space shooter since the console’s launch.  Now it looks like they’ll finally be getting one.  There is no release date mentioned yet for Xyanide, but hopefully Xbox owners won’t have too much longer to wait.
