Castlevania:
Portrait of Ruin
After
last year’s debut on the Nintendo DS, Konami proved that the
Castlevania series could be adjusted quite nicely to operate on the
portable system. It
harkened back to the 2D games that most fans of the series prefer, and
also found a way to make good use of the system’s touch screen.
Now fans can look forward to a new addition to the DS in the form
of Portrait of Ruin.
Unlike previous Castlevania games, this one will be a tad more contemporary, taking place during the Second World War. Due to the chaos of this time, there are a lot more lost souls wandering the Earth in a sort of limbo, all of whom aren’t quite sure what they should do in order to achieve salvation. Sensing an opportunity for evil, a pair of vampire sisters have convinced these souls to help them rebuild Dracula’s castle so that they can resurrect their |

master,
claiming that it will help the souls find what they want.
Enter vampire hunter Jonathan Morris, and the magically endowed
Charlotte Orleans, who must now find a way to stop this.
As mentioned earlier, Portrait of Ruin will be 2D just like the last Castlevania to hit the DS. Over the course of the game, players can freely swap between using Jonathan and Charlotte, using their varying skills as necessary (Jonathan is the weapons expert, while Charlotte sticks with magic). As an addition for this outing, Charlotte’s magic will be more than the standard fair of zap-blast-heal-buff sorcery. In Portrait of Ruin, players will |

also be able to summon demons
to help
beat down the bad guys. What
remains to be seen is if the game will see touch screen
functionality like its predecessor, as there hasn’t been much in the
way of official mention as such yet.
It was generally well received in Dawn of Sorrow, so it
wouldn’t be a surprise to see it come back.
There
will also be plenty of weapons to collect, and monsters to fight in the
game, but seeing as it has only recently been announced, the
developers are staying relatively mum on the nitty-gritty details for
now. With it being a late April announcement, Portrait
of Ruin is looking like another one of those “wait till E3!” type
games.
