Kingdom Hearts Re:coded

Last year, Square-Enix brought out a series of episodic action / puzzle games for mobile phones that took place in the Kingdom Hearts universe called Kingdom Hearts Coded. Now, the company is bundling them up, and bringing them to the DS in one tidy package.

Re:coded's gameplay combines puzzling solving with action, and some RPG elements. Much of the game is fairly straightforward action RPG fair, as players going around beating down bad guys, with puzzles cropping up now and then, as well as some platforming being thrown in from time to time.

Taking place after Kingdom Hearts II, Jiminy Cricket is leafing through his journal, recalling all of the adventures he and the other KH characters have been on when he discovers an entry that isn't his, and it seems to hint that someone is in danger. Concerned, he takes this to Mickey Mouse who creates a virtual version of all the worlds mentioned in the journal, and goes to investigate. In that

world he finds a virtual version of Sora, the main protagonist of the Kingdom Hearts series, and asks him to take a look around and see what's going on. From here players try and discover the mystery of the unknown journal entry.

It's unclear how much of a facelift Re:Coded will be getting for its DS incarnation, but hopefully Square-Enix will beautify it to some degree, as the mobile phone version's graphics were never all that great, and had some overly simple animations.

It seems Kingdom Heart fans have an unquenchable thirst for new installments in the series, so it comes as no surprise that Coded is getting a DS port. There's no word yet on a release date, but it does appear that Square-Enix would like to get it out the door some time in 2010.
