Assault: Phantom War
The
Mech Assault series has been a favorite with fans of giant robots,
making for an interesting juxtaposition as the franchise, known for such
massive pieces of machinery, is headed to such a tiny handheld system. Now DS owners have a giant robot game headed their way with
the word “Gundam” nowhere to be seen in the title, as Majesco has
just announced Mech Assault: Phantom War.
Those
wondering just how the game will be ported to Nintendo’s handheld
system should note that Phantom War is being handled by Backbone
Entertainment and Digital Eclipse, who also made the recently released
Age of Empires: Age of Kings for the DS.That game actually came out surprisingly well, even with the play
style switching from real-time to
turn-based.As such, it should give Mech Assault fans at least a glimmer of
hope that their series can make a respectable transition to the DS as
well.
But
what’s planned for Phantom War that can take advantage to the DS’
unique functionality?Not
surprisingly, players will be able to make liberal use of the system’s
touch screen.Here, players
will attempt to hack into, and steal enemy Mechs, swap out weapon
controls, and eject from their Mech if things start to go horribly wrong
in battle.
As
with any giant robot game, variety is important. So to help address this, 20 different vehicles will be at
players’ disposal

including
Tanks, Turret and Battle Armors, and, of course, the Mechs themselves. With that, there will be 24 campaigns to take these war machines
through, spanning four different planets, as players try to unlock even
more Mechs, maps, and enhancements. If gamers don’t feel like spending the whole of their time in
these single player missions, there will also be three different
multiplayer modes to choose from, through the DS’ wifi set up.What these modes will involve, though, remains to be seen.
Also
unknown up to now is where the narrative for Phantom War is headed, but
nonetheless, it looks like the game’s developers are quite set on
continuing the success they enjoyed from taking Age of Empires to the DS
with Mech Assault.At this
point, it’s anyone’s guess as to when Phantom War will be released,
as anything hinting at it is of the rather nebulous “Later this
year!” variety, but here’s to hoping Backbone and Eclipse do just as
well, if not better with this game, as they did with their last DS
effort.
