The Gamecube has become the home of the Resident Evil series, with the excellent remake of the original and Resident Evil Zero. Next we have the long awaited follow up chapter in Resident Evil 4 and the game looks like it will not disappoint. The developers are promising quite a few changes, and from what has been made known, these changes will potentially reestablish Resident Evil as the premier series in the survival horror genre.

Here’s what the official announcement had included:

Based on the popular Resident Evil series, which has sold more than 24 million units worldwide, Resident Evil 4 sees the return of a familiar hero on a mission of the highest level.  Capcom plans to release Resident Evil 4 this winter throughout North America.

In Resident Evil 4 players are reacquainted with Leon S. Kennedy, Raccoon City Police Department’s idealistic rookie cop from Resident Evil 2.  It has been six years since the destruction of Raccoon City and in that time, the U.S. government has been able to destroy the nefarious Umbrella Corporation.  Fast forward to 2004 and players rejoin Leon, who is now a U.S. agent with a top-secret mission.  He has been tasked to look into the abduction of the President’s daughter and his investigation has led him to a mysterious location in Europe.  As Leon encounters unimaginable horrors, he must find out who or what is behind everything.

“Capcom’s Resident Evil series is synonymous with survival horror.  The games have a long standing reputation for introducing innovation and raising the bar to create intensely terrifying experiences for players,” said Todd Thorson, director of marketing, Capcom USA.  “With a slew of new and redesigned concepts, Resident Evil 4 presents a fear more real than ever before.  The game is set to revolutionize both the world of Resident Evil and survival horror.”

One of the first things of note we see of what has been changed, is the camera. This is probably the one aspect of the series that has garnished the most criticism and many gamers will no doubt rejoice that it has been reworked to the behind the player third person view. The game is set to be a much more action oriented game with the actions sequences much more intuitive with the new camera angle and the new aiming mechanics. Also, the A button on the Gamecube controller is set to be context sensitive, which will allow Leon to perform various actions with the use of this single button.

Graphically the game looks absolutely fabulous. Bringing the series into the fully 3D world, this new chapter is definitely a departure from the aging level designs that were prominent in some of the earlier chapters. Moving away from the Umbrella corporation plot and Raccoon city is sure to bring a much needed injection of originality back to the series. Finally, this new chapter of Resident Evil is set to catapult the series into a new era, and to leave behind low texture backgrounds, and rehashed plots.
