Viewtiful Joe

It’s kinda funny.  For the longest time plenty of gamers have been crying from the highest point in the city how graphics aren’t important.  It’s the gameplay that’s king…though these same people tend to forget this rule good and quick when defending their console of choice, but I digress.  Nowadays, though, it can easily be argued that visuals matter in games depending how you look at it.  Fancy aesthetics for the sake of fancy aesthetics will get you nowhere without some decent gameplay, but having the visuals serve some sort of a role in how the gameplay works could have potential.  It seems that Capcom agrees as they have one such game trying to tap into this on the Gamecube by the name of Viewtiful Joe.

The game starts off with Joe at the movies with his girlfriend, Sylvia, as they watch Joe’s favorite movie, Captain Blue.  Somehow Sylvia gets herself sucked into the movie and now it’s up to Joe to go in there after her and save the day.  As he makes progress in the game, Joe begins to acquire new special attacks that actually manipulate the visuals of the game such as messing with it’s speed or just doing an ultra stylized attack that lays waste to whomever is unfortunate enough to get in its way.

Atsushi Inaba (producer of Steel Battalions) and Hideki Kamiya (director of Devil May Cry and Resident Evil 2) are both working on this game, certainly a bit of a departure from the more gritty titles they’ve been working on of late.  At this time the game is slated for an October 2003 release.
