Advent Rising

Usually when a game has an ancient race lost to the passage of time that is prophesized to one day return it’s humans on the prowl to find them and have an entire mythos surrounding said race.  Now it looks like Glyphx has decided to turn things all topsy-turvy, making humans the ancient lost race and the rest of the universe anticipating their return in Advent Rising, a 3rd person action/adventure game for the PC and Xbox.

Throughout the universe humans are thought to be almost a myth as no one has actually seen or met one of their race, but most civilizations believe that upon their return they will unite the universe and ring in a new age.  However, the Seekers don’t share this sentiment as they fear the power of the humans and know that this legendary race does indeed exist.  With this fear the Seekers have taken it upon themselves to track down these small pockets of human civilization under the guise of being peaceful explorers in order to destroy them.

This in mind, players take control of Gideon Wyeth, a citizen of the last remaining human outpost who must stop the Seekers from wiping out the last of his kind.  In the process Gideon discovers he has a number of abilities of the seemingly telekinetic variety, the source

of his race’s now legendary power.  The story is being written by sci-fi author, Orson Scott Card, who is the first to win both the Hugo and Nebula awards for science fiction writing two years in a row.  With the level of credentials this man has in the field of sci-fi storytelling, Advent Rising’s narrative could prove quite compelling.

Gideons powers are a focal point of combat in the game and will open up as players make their way through the game, and will become more potent the more players use them.  Of course unlocking new special powers won’t be the only weapon in

players arsenals as they traverse Advent Rising’s world.  There will also be plenty of tangible firearms with multiple modes of fire and vehicles at one’s disposal to wreak bloody havoc on the Seekers with.

Glyphx plans to make each of the environments in Advent truly massive, so hopefully this will allow for a lot of exploration as players control Gideon.  Also present is the ability to target two enemies at once during combat.  Hopefully we’ll see even more interesting gameplay features as the game continues to take form.

The game will run on the Unreal Warfare engine and looks very pretty judging from what has been released so far.  With high levels of detail, pretty lighting effects, and fancy animations, players could be in store for quite a bit of eye candy in Advent Rising.

Narrative, though, is what appears to be taking center stage in Advent Rising, as Glyphx is really trying to convey a very epic feel for the game.  With a different sort of twist on the “ancient race” formula in sci-fi the game already seems to be on its way there.  We’ll get to see how well they pulled it all off when the game is released in early 2004.
