Bayonetta
After wowing gamers with his Devil May Cry series, Hideki Kamiya is taking a stab at a new game on the PS3 and 360 with just as much style, and action as his last series. Gone is the gritty, red jacket-sporting Dante, and now we have the stiletto-toting, leather ensconced witch, Bayonetta. The game looks like a logical progression from the DMC series, with a fresh cast of characters to follow.
Just looking at the action in the game so far, there is little doubt that this is the spiritual successor to Devil May Cry. Bayonetta is armed with a pair of guns, as well as guns built into her shoes (I guess the stilettos aren’t just a fashion statement), while also being able to engaging in both melee, and magic-based combat. Just as Dante and Nero were able to fluidly switch between various styles of attacks on the fly, so too will our heroine here, and all with the utmost style. Moreover, there will also be finishing moves to help punctuate one’s kills in the game. Oddly enough, they do appear to involve summoning rather complex torture devices seemingly from thin air in order to do the deed. Hurray for magic, yes?

Not surprisingly, the game is looking very good thus far, with the expected mix of dark, dank, foreboding motifs to traverse. Bayonetta herself's design seems to be trying to appeal to as many fetishists as possible since she has everything from six inch stilettos, to a tight leather suit, and glasses all rolled into one. I suspect it won’t be long before we see action figures coming out for her, so everyone can have a little Bayonetta staring at them next to the computer. |

The whole reason for our witch heroine to stylishly dispatch of enemies is unknown not only to us, but to her as well. At the beginning of the game, she wakes up in some god forsaken place, with no memories of how she got there, or who she is. As players progress, Bayonetta slowly starts to remember everything.
Devil May Cry really raised the bar as to what players expect when it comes to stylish, fast-paced action games, and now it appears that Bayonetta will try to continue where that series left off. At this point, the game is due out in January 2010. Mr. Nash July 27, 2009 |
