The
biggest part of what makes a horror game work is how it puts a
player’s mind in a very uneasy state. There have been quite a number of games to really nail this and
leave those who’ve played them wishing they hadn’t turned out the
lights while playing.Now
Headfirst Productions is going to some of the roots of horror-based
fiction with a game based on the works of HP Lovecraft. In this case, his story Call of Cthulhu.
The
mythos behind Cthulhu is that of an ancient, malevolent being waiting
for it’s time to walk the Earth once more, striking terror into the
population of the world.The
game will be based in the roaring 20s and tap into this backstory,
certainly as good of a place as any to start a game’s plot from. The key will be capturing Lovercraft’s knack for constantly
putting a chill down a person’s spine while experiencing the story.
In
hopes of amplifying this sense of being ill at ease, Headfirst plans to
have no HUD display or any other icons obscuring the screen during
regular play.Just the
player and the game world

will be presented, potentially adding a
stronger sense of immersion to the title.
