Civilization Revolution

Sid Meier’s Civilization series has been a well-established mainstay on the PC for well over a decade now, and it has even made the occasional appearance on a console (hello, SNES version!).  Now the series is making another appearance on the consoles, with PS3, Xbox 360, and DS versions in the works, and even a Wii edition thereafter.

Thus far, it doesn’t appear that Civilization Revolution will be deviating too much from the series’ core concepts.  Players still start off in a stone aged society, and slowly learn new skills, building up cities, colonizing, fending off raiders, going to war, and so forth.  The game consists of much of what has made the series so popular.

However, Firaxis is planning to heavily streamline certain gameplay aspects for Revolution.  Players won’t have to deal with pollution, corruption, and other issues that have required constant micromanagement in prior Civilization games.  Also, the maps will be noticeably smaller here, doing away with massive

empires of dozens of cities, and instead seeing something smaller along the lines of, say, a five or six cities that players will have to deal with at any one time.

Whether or not the core audience can be bothered to try out this interpretation of the Civilization series remains to be seen.  Is the micromanagement elements of these games so central to the experience that the game will start to feel dumbed down for those who have been playing it for ten years or so?  Or will it be a welcomed change of pace?
