Drake

One of the few games I actually played at E3, Drake is a mix of Max Payne and BloodRayne’s mechanics and the visual style of Batman Vengeance and Sly Cooper, with a dead guy as the main character.  Here are the facts as they stand:

Storyline:

The 99 Dragons Clan has been murdered.  Even worse, the ancient artifact they guard, stolen. With its power, one can trap the souls of the living and resurrect those who have crossed over.  As Drake, a member of the 99 Dragons, you have been mysteriously brought back from the dead to right these wrongs.  Using supernatural weapons, martial arts and firearms galore, you will exact furious, brutal revenge and reclaim the artifact before it becomes the ultimate weapon of evil.

Game Play Overview:

Intense 3D Action Comic Book style. Drake is a 3rd person, adrenaline-pumping game of brutal revenge and supernatural Hong Kong action. Players are thrown head first into a story-driven action shooter visualized in a vibrant “neon-gothic” comic book style. Drake promises to keep you on the edge of your seat with double fisted pistol action, supernatural enemies and an unexpected twist to the storyline.

Even though there’s still months of development ahead, Drake’s graphics come across as polished – and they’d better be with the amount of action, which seems to be non-stop.  And although Drake borrows many ideas from other sources, the one I have the most apprehension about it the ability to “feed on the souls of the dead to replenish your health.”  Other games, notably Blood Omen 2 and BloodRayne featured lots of time-consuming and repetitive bloodsucking.  It broke up the action not so subtly.  If Idol FX can address this issue they’ll be able to cram more action into the game.

In regard to “in-depth storyline,” I have nothing to say.  Maybe there is a an in-depth story, who knows, but Drake seems more about action than complex character and story development. (Call me a cynic.)

Look for Drake this November (2003).
