Evil Dead: Regeneration

Ash returns in a new Evil Dead and is back to his old zombie-beating, shotgun-wielding crazy masochist self. With the last Evil Dead movie "Army of Darkness", released in 1993, the series is left to continue in the realm of video games. Even though Hail to the King and Fistful of Boomstick did not live up to the hype, THQ is attempting their own "regeneration" of the Evil Dead series and entrusting Crank Pants Games to accomplish it.

In Evil Dead: Regeneration, Ash is accused of murder and arrested. He is convicted but luckily escapes a death sentence.  Instead he is assigned to Sunny Meadows, an institute for the criminally insane. However, his troubles are not over as the Necronomicon, the Book of

the Dead is back. That book seems to haunt him, seemingly following Ash everywhere. This time it’s in the hands of a Dr. Vingo who is obsessed with science. He attempts to combine the  Necronomicon with technology and unleashes its evil upon the world. Along with the evil comes a new breed of Deadites, monsters and all sorts of instruments of death.

Ash will also have a teammate for the first time in the Evil Dead series. His sidekick is a three foot tall snarky deadite that is able to help Ash through the adventure in some unique ways. For example, Ash is readily willing to use him

as a tiki torch and a bowling ball to help his own cause. In fact Ash would rather kill his sidekick than depend on him but then again, we don't always get what we want.

Along with Ash's chainsaw and renowned "boomstick", he also makes use of everything from harpoon guns to flamethrowers. Also promised are hordes of evil dead monsters to serve as good practice for wielding your diverse weapons. If this all sounds familiar, don't be surprised. It seems to be following the exact same Evil Dead formula that previous games had and shows little sign of innovation. If Crank Pants Games can fix the nuances found in the previous games, such as spotty collision detection and repetitive combat, this might be a respectable game. Otherwise it will just become another appetizer to satisfy the appetites of Evil Dead fanatics.
