Geometry Wars: Galaxies

When it first appeared on Xbox Live Arcade, the simple visuals, and back-to-basics emphasis on the almighty high score turned Geometry Wars into an instant hit with both casual and hardcore gamers.  Given the success of the game, it’s surprising that it took so long for the title to make its way to other platforms.  However, this won’t be the case for much longer, as Sierra Entertainment has announced that Geometry Wars will be heading to both the Nintendo Wii and DS later this year.

The game was only just recently announced, so information is still rather sparse.  What we do know, though, is that Geometry Wars: Galaxies’ developers plan to greatly expand on the original game.  One of the best ways to go about this is by adding a bunch of new modes, and that’s exactly what Kuju and Bizarre Creations are doing.  There will be single-player mission-based campaigns, new grids to play on, and something called “hot shots” that takes advantage of the DS touch screen (we’re assuming the Wii controller will have something similar).

Gamers won’t only be playing by themselves, as there are a number of multiplayer modes planned for Galaxies.  The DS version won’t necessitate both players having a copy of the game for multiplayer, either.  Among them one will find co-op, versus, simultaneous, and hot seat modes.  We’re not too sure what

the difference between simultaneous and co-op is, so we’ll need to look into that further.  They do sound awfully similar…

Geometry Wars was a great, old school gaming experience when it appeared on Xbox Live.  Hearing that the game is making its way to other platforms will be welcome news for many, and the wait shouldn’t be terribly long either, as it appears that Galaxies will be out before the end of the year.
