Golden Axe: Beast Rider
It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a new Golden Axe game, leaving us with little alternative but to play the Sega Genesis classics that are pushing the 15-20 years old mark. The series helped to shape the hack n’ slash genre way back in the late 1980s, but never really grew after that. Now all these years later, Sega has decided to revive the brand and the game will be getting an overhaul in the process.
As the title suggests, players will spend much of their time riding around on dinosaur-looking creatures sort of like muscular raptors. Sadly, there isn’t much in the way of details regarding this aspect of the game just yet. Besides this, there will be plenty of traditional hacking and slashing as players run around, cutting up |

barbarians and the like, while occasionally zapping them with a touch of magic.
Tying in this game with its predecessors, players will take control of the barbarian lass Tyris Flare. However, Beast Riders appears to be a prequel to the other Golden Axe games, with players helping Tyris avenge her tribe. |

Looking at the visuals so far, there is quite a bit of detail, but what stands out is that many of the environments seem quite harsh and desolate with plenty of deserts and a distinct lack of greenery. Whether or not the whole game will be like this remains to be seen.
At the helm for this game will be Secret Level, whose closest foray into a game like Golden Axe has been Final Fight: Streetwise, which was not very well received at all. Hopefully the studio took note of what people didn’t like about that game, and will make sure to do a better job when trying to revitalize this classic series.
