Hellboy

Gaming’s about to go to hell once again, as Satan’s progeny will star in his very own game, Hellboy, starring the redheaded stepchild (literally) in a new, original story based on the comic book that spawned the movie.

Krome Studios, who is in charge of bringing Hellboy to the gaming realm, to date has developed titles geared towards a much younger demographic, with a Jimmy Neutron and not one, but two Barbie (yes, Barbie) game to its credit. Hellboy should be a swing in the entirely opposite direction, with brawling and violence stoking its gaming fires.

What screenshots that are posted on publisher Konami’s website show a visually impressive title that takes advantage of the next-generation hardware, with the developers touting dynamic lighting effects, to bring Hellboy to life straight off the pages of the comic.

The story will also follow along the fiery path of the comic book, as Hellboy is hunting down a witch, which uncovers a Nazi plan under the direction of Hermann Von Klempt, who’s intent on evildoing for the purpose of world domination. That storyline serves as the backdrop for what is planned to be a hell-bent brawler game, featuring an interactive destructible environment, with you

as Hellboy using his Right Hand of Doom smashing the hell out (or should that be in?) of everybody that gets in your way.

Hopefully, all the action and hellish humor of the comic make their way into the game. It won’t be just Hellboy having all the fired-up fun, however. Hellboy the game features a co-op mode where you can play as either Abe Sapien or Liz Sherman.

Interestingly, at this year’s E3, I didn’t see even a passing glance of Hellboy, maybe an indication that this game won’t be out until later in 2007. If the game stays on its developmental course, I expect to be getting more of a chance to see it at E3 2007.
