Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games

There has been an onslaught of party games to be released on the Wii up to this point.  Some of these games have been good, and quite a few more have been bad.  One common thread that all of these games have is their quirkiness, as they try to outdo one another with over-the-top activities.  Now it looks like Sega is taking the notion of the mini-game, and instead of putting out another silly party game, they will be doing something a little more serious, albeit with a cartoony twist, with Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games.

Activities here will include track and field events, swimming, table tennis, and the like, marking a hasty departure from the drawing, air hockey, drowning irate

bunnies with carrot juice, and whatnot that has become a staple of party games as of late.  Beyond these three events it is still unknown what other sports players will be able to partake in during the game.

By the looks of things, one of Sega’s teams (not Sonic Team) will be handling most of the development for the game, but with Shigeru Miyamoto overseeing

the process.  At the moment, most talk about Mario and Sonic at the Olympics is concentrating on the Wii version of the game, with emphasis being placed on how the game will be a good fit for the Wii’s controller.

While the game is being developed for both the Wii and the DS, company reps are emphasizing the former at this point.  Wii Sports has already proven how well suited the Wii’s controller is to sports games, and continuing this with an Olympics-related game seems like a logical decision.

In any event, the game was only announced a little over a week ago, so information is understandably sparse, while developers do the rounds with major media outlets.  For now all we can do is speculate as to what other events will be in the game, and how Sonic and Mario characters will be incorporated into the whole thing.  That being said, speculate away!
