Men
of Valor: The Vietnam War
Following up on the first-person shooter goodness of the Medal of Honor series (the last of which was Medal of Honor: Allied Assault), Sierra and 2015 are currently preparing the release of Men of Valor: The Vietnam War. Scheduled to be released in the third quarter of 2004 on PC, Xbox and possibly the PS2, Men of Valor appears set to recapture the historical authenticity and intensive game-play which made Medal of Honor a first-person classic. Sierra and 2015 are working toward making Men of Valor an upgrade to the Medal of Honor series in all respects. Through improved AI both in enemy forces and fellow GIs (who will accompany, assist and die at your side throughout the game), detailed graphics, interactive (ie. non-linear) ‘scripted sequences’, Men of Valor should be a stimulating gaming experience. The online features of Men of Valor should be extremely entertaining. Various multiplayer modes are being developed which will allow the gamer to play from either the perspective of Viet Cong guerrillas, the North Vietnamese army or American forces. The game will also support a cooperative mode which will allow a player to experience an entire tour of duty alongside fellow gamers.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Men of Valor is how the game’s developers are approaching the storyline. The narrative of the game will follow an American marine through the early stages of the conflict – from ‘search and destroy missions around Da Nang airbase to the Tet Offensive and the counterattack on Hue’. Openly admitting that the conflict is ‘the most controversial of the modern era’, the makers of Men of Valor are promising a storyline which captures the ‘heroism and valor typical of the American soldier…unsung during the turbulent times’. What this exactly means remains to be seen. |
