Prey
There
are a few games that have been discussed over the years that have had
insanely long development cycles, with everyone wondering when the thing
will come out, or if it will even see the light of day.One such game is Duke Nukem Forever, which has more or less
become a running joke on many a message board when people talk about a
release date for the thing.Another
game that has come pretty damn close to the same fate is Prey. However, a new publisher and developer have picked up the IP, and
are now back at work on making the game, with all signs pointing to the
long watched first person shooter likely coming out sooner than later.
Players
will find themselves taking on the role of a Cherokee mechanic named
Tommy, who, along with his girlfriend, finds himself suddenly abducted
and trapped on an alien spaceship.Of course, these aliens aren’t very nice, making escape a most
welcome option.As such,
players need to find a way off the ship, and also stop the aliens from
destroying Earth. To help round out the story a bit, and make sure it doesn’t
sound like every other “Oooo, aliens
are
bad, and out to destroy us all” plot out there, the game will also tap
into Tommy's Cherokee roots, as he has a spirit companion in the form of
a hawk, as well as other hints that connect to Tommy’s cultural
heritage.
With
the FPS being around for so long now, it’s not hard to get a bit wary
of constantly seeing new additions to the genre come along. In order to help Prey stand out from the crowd, the game’s
developer, Human Head Studios, have a couple of things that they are
working on.Firstly, they
will be introducing portal technology that will allow

enemies
to appear out of nowhere, catching players off guard. This could be interesting if players are trying to sneak up on a
guard, then all of a sudden three other enemies appear around him, for
instance.The second
feature that is in the works taps into how the ship that Tommy is
trapped on is an organic vessel. As
such, various parts of the ship itself will try to attack players as
they make their way through the game.Blasting through hordes of little green men can be challenge
enough in an FPS, but dealing with malicious bulkheads, and the like may
well add a new dimension to the gameplay if Human Head has anything to
say about it.
Even
with some tweaks being added to a long running genre, one has to wonder
what the main reason will be for gamers to run out and buy Prey when the
game is completed.Will it
purely be from all the features the game has, or simply out of curiosity
of how this game, initially announced almost a decade ago, turns out.
