The way Ubi Soft is pumping out new Prince of Persia games, almost to the point of annual new releases, it is really starting to look like the publisher has found itself a new golden boy that will give the company’s current most recognizable character, Sam Fischer, a run for his money.  Now a third installment in the series is in the works, picking up where the previous game left off.

At the start of Prince of Persia 3, the prince has saved his girlfriend, Princess Kaileena, and they are making their way back to the pair’s homeland, the city of Babylon.  Unfortunately, upon arriving they discover that the city is in ruins, wracked by war, and it doesn’t take long before the prince is arrested.  As a last ditch effort to try and remedy the situation, Kaileena unleashes the Sands of Time, and winds up sacrificing herself in the process.  Luckily, this act does the trick, and gets the prince out of jail.  Unfortunately for him, though, all of this futzing around with that sand, and changing time has caused a dark, foul-tempered twin of himself to manifest.  With that this unlikely pair have to learn to work together if they want to find a way to bring Babylon back to its former greatness.

Seeing as Prince of Persia 3 has a dysfunctional duo as its protagonists, this means that players get two characters to control in the game.  At its core, this new title will have many of the same features that made the last two games so popular, like the ability to control time, nimble bobbing, dodging, hacking, and slashing, and so forth, but to jazz things up a bit, the

prince and his twin will have their own unique play styles.  On one hand, the prince will the stealthy, acrobatic chap who specializes in avoiding bad guys, and tackling the tricking platforming of the game, though he can still fight to a reasonable degree.  On the other hand, we have the prince’s dark twin, who is the lean, mean killing machine of the game, more than happy to make mince meat of anyone standing the pair’s way, all in the name of saving Babylon (or perhaps just for his own pleasure).

This latest installment in the series is slated to have many other features that have become

hallmarks of the last two games, with time manipulation, puzzle solving, and a fast pace.  In the visuals department, Prince of Persia 3 seems to be embracing the same sort of art style that its last two predecessors sported.  The level of detail is looking quite impressive at this point, and the enemy designs aren’t looking too shabby from what has been revealed thus far.

Assuming that Ubi Soft makes Prince of Persia 3 as tight as The Sands of Time, and Warrior Within, this latest game could prove quite fun, especially if this use of two main characters pans out.  About the only thing that could hurt PoP 3 is the potential market saturation the game could suffer from, what with releasing a game pretty much every year these days.  That being said, expect to see this game on store shelves at every game magazine editor's favorite time of year: the fourth quarter..
