Rampage
Total Destruction
I have to
squelch my desire to recount childhood afternoons spent dropping
quarters into the original arcade Rampage. Besides the original
arcade Gauntlet, there's no other multiplayer game that jumps out at me
as being one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Rampage
featured up to three simultaneous monsters smashing up buildings and
anything that got in their way, including military vehicles, and eating
hapless humans for a small health boost.
Since the
original game, the franchise has always stuck to a 2D perspective but
with Rampage Total Destruction the series breaks into 3D, though the
familiar perspective is present. Here's the official line from
Midway:
Get
ready to roam, rage and Rampage your way through cities of the world
destroying everything in your path in Rampage: Total Destruction!
George, Lizzy and Ralph are back along with 27 new monsters that you
can find, collect and play as. Wander through 3D neighborhoods of
major cities trashing everything in sight as you uncover hidden
monsters and power-ups. As an added bonus the original arcade versions
of Rampage and Rampage World Tour are included. Available in Spring
2006 for Sony Playstation 2 (1-2 players) and Nintendo GameCube (1-4
players) for $19.99 (U.S. MSRP)
Basically,
Rampage Total Destruction is a 3-in-1 package that demonstrates how the
series has progressed since its inception. The action looks to
stay consistent with past iterations but besides the leap into 3D it'll
also feature 27 new monsters. It remains to be seen if each of the
monsters has unique abilities but considering the benchmarks set by the
previous games the creatures will only be different on the outside.
It's
worthy noting that the GameCube version will feature four-player action,
while the PS2 version will not. This automatically puts the
GameCube version at an advantage but it will be interesting to see how
the

development
team incorporates team play while ultimately looking out for yourself.
(It was always fun to eat your fallen comrades when they transformed
back to their human form.) I'm also curious as to what other modes
might be available besides the "story" mode.
At
a suggested price of $20US Rampage Total Destruction (a 3-in-1 value) it
might be written off as simply a "budget" title with little in
the way of redeeming qualities. However, this being a Rampage game
with unbridled destruction being the main point of the game, it will
likely find its way onto the playlists of casual gamers everywhere.
