Red Dead Redemption
It’s not often that a game set in the Old West comes along. For some reason, that period in history tends to get overlooked by the game industry. Why this is so is anyone’s guess. Maybe developers saw too many spaghetti westerns growing up, and have had enough of the genre. In any case, when Red Dead Revolver came along, it turned some heads for actually giving us a game set in this era. The game faired reasonably well with the critics, and sold quite respectably. However, it has been almost five years since the game came out with no sign of a sequel until recently, as Rockstar has announced that Red Dead Redemption is in the works for the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Redemption pits players in the role of John Marston, a former outlaw who is now helping to bring order to the lawless west, as government begins to assert its authority in the region. Out of this, a number of sub-plots will emerge, many of which we suspect will invariably lead to shootouts of some sort or another. It is the Old West after all. |

Given that the West was a vast, expansive region, it seems logical that Rockstar would create a vast, expansive game here. Utilizing the RAGE engine, which the developer used to create GTA IV, Redemption will be a very open-ended game, giving players a lot of freedom to do as they please.
Seeing as Rockstar has only just announced Red Dead Redemption, details are far and few between. We have a smattering of early screenshots, confirmation that they’re using the RAGE engine, and know the game takes place in the Wild West, but that’s about it. The game is due out in the fall of this year, so hopefully it won’t be too much longer before we can get more information on it.
