Red Ninja: End of Honor
For
all of the popularity that ninjas have in the popular mindset it’s
hard to think of many titles showcasing these silk jammy-jam wearing
assassins outside of the major franchises (Shinobi, Tenchu, and Ninja
Gaiden).Now Vivendi and
Tranji are teaming up to do something about this with Red Ninja: End of
Honor for the PS2 and Xbox.
Set
in 16th Century Japan, players will take control ofKurenai, a woman who was left for dead after she and her father
were attacked by the Black Lizard Clan. She was able to survive the ordeal, but her father perished.Understandably miffed by the event, Kurenai trains in the use of
the Tetsugen, a wire-based weapon, with the clan who rescued her and
nursed her back to health, so that she can one day track down the Black
Lizard Clan and exact revenge for her father’s death.
While
the story looks to be your traditional tale of vengeance, the gameplay
appears to be wandering off the beaten path.Firstly Kurenai’s weapon, the Tetsugen, is set to be a very
versatile piece of equipment as it will be highly customizable with
different attachments dictating the use of the weapon as well as the
length of cable being used at a given time having an effect on how the
weapon is manipulated.Also
of note is that Kurenai will be able to use her womanly attributes to
distract the enemies.On
top of this there will be a mix of stealth and straightforward melee
combat in Red Ninja, all slapped into what are purported to be some very
large environments.
Red
Ninja was only just announced at TGS 2003, so we still have quite a wait
ahead of us before the game is completed. However, there is quite a bit of experience behind the Tranji
team, with the game’s story being written by Japanese film director
Shinsuke Sato, and the combined development studios of New
Corporation (developers of Victorious Boxers on the PS2 and Knockout
Kings 2003 on the Gamecube) and Opus
(developers of Ultimate Fighting Championship on the PSX and Wave Rally
for the PS2 and Xbox), so hopefully we’ll see a good amount of
combined experience hammer out a solid title for its release in 2004.
