Resident Evil 5

If there was ever any need to provide evidence that a company is learning from its past mistakes and successes, it would be Capcom's upcoming Resident Evil 5.

From the information available, including the very "controversial" gameplay clips that spawned myriad commentary, it looks like Capcom has learned something from two of its previous zombie games: Dead Rising and Resident Evil 4.  Resident Evil 4 underwent many different iterations before the game finally shipped as a

timed-exclusive on GameCube, and all that hard work paid off - it turned the world of Resident Evil's fixed camera perspectives on its head with an over-the-shoulder view.  Then came Dead Rising a few years later on the Xbox 360, which featured burly photojournalist Frank West in a huge environment to run around, hordes and hordes of zombies,

and the ability to pick up and utilize a wide assortment of environmental objects as weapons.  And though Dead Rising appears to be outside the Resident Evil cannon, the physicality that the returning Chris Redfield shows in Resident Evil 5, leads me to hope that besides the usual shotguns and handguns that he'll be able to use some good old-fashioned brute force as Chris explores the African origin of the virus last seen in Code: Veronica.

That's about as much that has been released about the story.  Presumably, there will be some explanation or exploration of what happened to Chris since the last time we saw him.

Reportedly, Resident Evil 5 will be a number of times larger in scope and size than Resident Evil 4, and accompanied by all the extra touches we've all come to expect with this generation of games, like a very high level of detail, more animation routines, destructible environments, better "thinking" enemies, and the ability to throw a lot of enemies on-screen at once.  The practicality of combining all these elements into gameplay scenarios should mean plenty of running around, trying to find cover or hide, only to be stymied by foes that have the drive to relentlessly pursue Chris.

All this should amount to an awesome gaming experience for Resident Evil fans, but more should be learned at E3 as Capcom has indicated they'll be showing more of the game at the event.  Hopefully there will be more revealed about the female "sidekick" but at least it doesn't look like you'll have to babysit her.
