More often than not when a game based on a comic sees the light of day it features the usual suspects from Marvel or DC Comics.  It’s not often that gamers get to play as other sorts of heroes, but Rebellion and Eidos are doing something about that as they put the finishing touches on Rogue Trooper for the PS2, PC, and Xbox, a 3D action shooter based on one of the most popular comics in the UK.

Set in a sci-fi setting, players will find themselves on a distant world called Nu Earth.  Here they will take control of the Rogue Trooper, the only surviving member of an elite military unit of genetically engineered soldiers.  All around, a huge conflict is erupting between the planet’s two major factions: the Norts and the Southers, but the Rogue Trooper doesn’t much care about this, what he wants is revenge for what happened to his unit.

Physically speaking players may take on the role of a one-man army, but the Rogue Trooper isn’t quite alone.  The spirits of a few of his comrades live on in his equipment and they’ll do their damnedest to help avenge their unit.

In order to make this happen, players will need to make full use of their environment, taking advantage of their surroundings to provide cover, corral enemy units, and so forth.  Adding to the basic premise of running around and shooting bad guys, Rebellion is adding the ability for players to create various types of ammunition to use as they wish.  From the sound of it, the whole process sounds like a sort of high tech alchemy as players try to slap together different components into one type of ammo or another.

There will also be a certain degree of customization available for the Rogue Trooper’s

various pieces of equipment, and players will have access to a number of vehicles in the game.  At close range, players will also be able to unload some fancy-schmancy finishing moves in an attempt to add a bit of dramatic flair to the game.  Those looking for multiplayer functionality can also expect split screen, and online play.

By and large, Rogue Trooper looks like a fairly straightforward sci-fi action title at its core.  Hopefully the game’s customization options, and semi-sentient equipment will help put the game over the top and ensure it is a success when it's released.
