The
Spy vs. Spy series of comics from Mad Magazine have always managed to
hover in the public eye to some degree or another over the decades. However, we haven’t really seen the dueling pair in many games
since the mid 1980s, at least outside of a GBC game that was released
about six years ago.Looking
to do something about this, Vicious Cycle Entertainment has a new game
based on the franchise slated for the Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox in April.
The
game is presented as a third person action title where players pick
between the black or white spy, then go through the levels fighting the
spy opposite in color to them.Players
will start off with a fairly limited arsenal that includes weapons like
a slingshot, and a club, plus the ability to go fisticuffs fighting with
Spy-Fu skills.As the game
progresses, players will be able to accumulate money that can be spent
on fancier weapons, and, keeping true to form with the comic, traps,
which can be used to get the upper hand on your enemy.
Another
facet of the game that could prove well received is how the game
approaches stealth.A lot
of games that have players sneaking around, even if based on cartoons,
can sometimes risk taking all of the cloak and dagger stuff a little too
seriously.Counteracting
this, Spy vs. Spy will take a sillier approach to the whole thing, with
the spies dawning ridiculous costumes at times to get passed the enemy.
With
the game clocking in at $20US when it launches, and the nostalgia
factor, it will be interesting to see how many people scoop up Spy vs.
Spy next month.
