Star Trek: Legacy

If one were to look at all of the sci-fi games released for the PC over the years, it wouldn’t take long to stumble across the small army of Star Trek games that have been made for the platform.  If you can think of a facet of the franchise that particularly stands out in your mind, chances are good that it has found its way into one of these games.  One of the few things that hasn’t really been seen in all of these Star Trek games is a seamless transition from one epoch to the next over the course of one game.  Now the folks at Bethesda plan to do something about this with Star Trek: Legacy on the PC and Xbox 360.

Basically, the key feature of Legacy is that it follows the Star Trek universe right from the time of Jonathan Archer up to the era in which Star Trek: The Next Generation takes place.  Up to this point gamers had to pick and choose between different games to play in these eras.  Did they want to play in Kirk’s universe?  What about fighting the Borg?  Maybe

a game about Klingons is the way to go?  With Legacy, fans can steadily progress through many of these time periods.

All the while, there will be four different races for players to choose from.  Obviously, there are the humans of the Federation, and the Klingons will be there; for those who want a race more of the evil / conniving variety, the Romulans and Borg will also be selectable.

Of course, with a large selection of races, comes a large selection of spaceships to cart them around in.  As such, Bethesda is planning over 60 ships for building, piloting, and taking into battle.  These will range from science vessels, to transports, to

scouts, and battleships.  Over time, the various ships will improve, as players make the transition from one era to the next, taking advantage of all of the new technology that comes with it.  As such, it appears that Bethesda is trying to add an element of emotional attachment to various ships in the game.  Players can build a dandy Constitution Class starship, go on all sorts of adventures with it, only for it to eventually become obsolete.  When this happens, conventional wisdom would say to mothball the thing, but think of the fun times you had.  Are you really ready to let it go so easily?

So, here we are.  Lots of ships, and a quartet of races that don’t always see eye to eye.  Not surprisingly, this will lead to quite a few conflicts in Legacy, and with that players will have to go to war.  Combat appears to be fast-paced, as this game will step away from the more real-time strategy-flavored offerings that have become more popular in Star Trek games.  Here, large fleets of ships will clash, but players will have more direct control over vessels, though the details on this are sparse at this time.  Nonetheless, it looks like the game's developers want battles to bring a more visceral experience to gamers.

All the while, Bethesda is promising copious amounts of eye candy, with large detailed, ships, pretty nebulas, and fancy lighting effects.  There have been countless Star Trek games to come out over the years, many of which have become quite popular.  As such, Bethesda will have to put their best foot forward to make sure that Legacy stands out from the crowd.  Hopefully, covering such a large amount of Star Trek history will do the trick.
