Star
Wars: Battlefront
LucasArts
recently announced details of their up and coming Star Wars
Battlefront which promises to be an intense, open-ended multi player
action game, much like Battlefield 1942 but set in the Star Wars universe.
Regardless if your platform of choice is the PC, Xbox or PS2 Star Wars
Battlefront is planned to take advantage of all online solutions. GameCube owners might start to
feel the impact of Nintendo’s online plan as they are left
out in the cold by, what could be, one of the most exciting games slated
for 2004.
Battles
are set over 15 environments across 10 diverse planets including Hoth,
Genonosis, Yavin, Tatooine and Naboo. The player will be able to select
one of over 20 different character types from one of four factions:
Rebel Alliance, Imperial Army, Clone Army and Droid Army. Each soldier
is slated to have special abilities as well as the freedom to use
ground-based turrets found on the battlefront, not to mention well over
15 diverse ground and air vehicles including the AT-ST, X-wing and
speeder bike.
Battlefront will be optimized for PS2 online, Xbox Live and of course
you will be able to take your PC online. The PC version of the game has
a slight advantage over the console versions as it allows up to
32-player battle over the internet where as the console versions are
limited at 16 players online but if set up in a LAN 32 players are
allowed so it’s not an entirely raw deal.
LucasArts
plans an in depth single player mode as well as numerous multiplayer
modes with a emphasis on a special mode they have dubbed ‘Conquest’
which adds innovative and strategic gameplay to the non stop action.
After each battle is completed and the planet is conquered, the winning
team will be rewarded with a special ‘bonus’ ability that can be
used in future battles in an attempt to take over the Star Wars galaxy,
planet-by-planet.
Star
Wars: Battlegrounds is a major eyebrow-raiser of the titles slated for
release in 2004 and given LucasArts success in the past, it leaves my
mouth watering in anticipation for final release. Published by LucasArts
and developed by Pandemic Studios this promises to be something to look
forward to, check out the official website at http://www.starwarsbattlefront.com
for more information.
