It’s
been a few months since 3DO bit the dust, and all the companies that
wanted to scoop up assets of the now defunct company have finished
picking the carcass’ bones.Right
in the thick of it was Namco, who saw a potential gem in Street Racing
Syndicate (SRS) being developed by Eutechnyx.Cashing in on the success of games like Midnight Club and Tokyo
Extreme Racing as well as The Fast and the Furious movies, this game
plans to bring the same late night racing culture to the PS2, Xbox, and
Gamecube.
While
embracing the general street racing theme we’ve become accustomed to
in the genre, what sets SRS apart from the pack is the high level of
customization the game will allow for.Players will be able to buy new parts for their cars as well as
tweak the settings of different components. Also, SRS will let you compete for money, pink slips, and the
girlfriends of rival racers.Even
more unusual is that players won’t only be involved in illegal races,
but also legitimate, fully sanctioned race events.
From
a visual standpoint, the game is looking quite pretty thus far, with
lots of nice lighting effects, and good reflections off of shiny
surfaces.Even the
environments have quite a bit of detail at the moment. The vehicles will also take realistic damage during the game
during collisions, with corresponding hindrances to car performance. However, I’d be quite skeptical as to the damage being wholly
realistic, otherwise every time a player smashes into a pole or has a
head-on they’d be stuck restarting the race, but if Eutechnyx does
indeed plan to shoot for that level of realism in SRS kudos to them for
making a surprisingly realistic damage system.
