When the Tony Hawk series first came out, its incredibly high sales made it a phenomenon in gaming. Sure it wasn’t to everyone’s liking but it was highly surprising to many gamers just how popular it was. Since then sales have been relatively hot for the franchise, though for the most recent titles things have slowed down. The new mechanics introduced in the last few games have felt less than fully-implemented and it has hit them where it hurts. The various developers working on this project are looking to turn that around for Tony Hawk Project 8.

It seems that this time the Tony Hawk franchise is going the way of the GTA series, Spiderman 2, and the upcoming Superman game. They’re looking to have a real-time, completely open ‘living’ city for you to skate around in. Aside from this massive undertaking they are also revamping a lot of the long-standing game mechanics and trying their best to breathe fresh life into the series. They’re saying that the game is being designed from the ground up for a new engine, and for next generation consoles.

What does that mean exactly? On the gameplay side it means secret areas, mini-games, new mechanics, side-missions, and in-depth stat-tracking. You can also now switch characters mid-game to help accomplish your goals. You’ll also see new features like a “Picture-in-Picture” option where a small video box in the corner

of your screen can show the action from a different perspective. Ramps and rails will become placeables that you can move throughout the city to trick into different areas. The physics engine will be new as well and will allow players to control their falls to minimize, or if its your kind of thing then to maximize, the damage you take when falling.

Graphically, we’ll be seeing full 3D body scans of popular skaters, and motion captured tricks and grinds. This is of course in addition to the updated graphics that always come with the newest installment of the popular franchise.
