Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 3

You might think that after the glut of heroes like Sonic the Hedgehog and Crash Bandicoot people would've tired of sassy marsupial mascots. You would be entirely wrong - the original Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, created by Austrailian development team Kronos, sold more than 1.2 million copies worldwide. In addition to a forthcoming cartoon series, Kronos is hard at work in bringing the third game to fans everywhere, this time being published in America by Activision.

Keeping with Australian tradition, Ty's main weapons are his boomerangs. His standard set can be equipped with a variety of stones, which can give it elemental properties like fire, or allow shots to be aimed in sniper mode. There are also several different kinds of boomerangs to use, including a boomerang-on-a-rope that spins the enemies into the

ground, allowing for an easy kill. There's a lot of depth in the arsenal, and it's certainly much more entertaining than just jumping on things.

Taking notes from Sony's popular platformers like Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank, there's a lot more to the game than just straight-up action. The cart racing from Ty 2 has returned, in addition to some free-roaming airplane levels reminiscent of Starfox. These aren't throwaway mini-games either - although they comprise a small portion of the overall picture, they're very well done, and stand up pretty well by themselves.

Although the developer I talked to was eager to point out that the game was geared more to kids, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 3 has, so far, proven to be much better than most of the dreck aimed at children. It may be a little bit easy or a little bit too cutesy for more grown-up gamers, but the third Ty is looking to be another decent adventure through the outback, due for the Playstation 2, Xbox and Gamecube this holiday season.
