Dead Rising: Chop Until You Drop

Porting Dead Rising from the Xbox 360 to the Playstation 3 seems like a logical thing to do, so when Capcom announced it was being brought to the Wii you could almost hear the collective cricket-chirping from the hardcore gamer section as they attempted to wrap their brains around the idea of a sandbox game like Dead Rising on the comparatively under-powered Wii.

Obviously doing some thinking before embarking on such port, Capcom appears to be making significant changes to the overall structure of the game.  Rather than having a massive mall to run around in, rescuing Survivors, with little in the way of

structure, Dead Rising: Chop Until You Drop will be using a more traditional linear mission structure.  The 72-hour clock is done away with; instead, each mission will be timed.  And the Overtime mode - unlocked with an "A" ending in the Xbox version - will be integrated into the game.

In a definite cave-in to the whiners and not-so-hardcore gamers

among us and possibly to avoid annoying the Wii audience of more causal gamers, the save structure has been modified.  Rather than one save slot, Chop Until You Drop will include more slots.

But it's not just about change.

It appears players will still be able to use a wide variety of objects as weapons.  Much of the fun of Dead Rising came from just fooling around in the mall - from clothes to food to weapons to books, they were all there for the taking - but with the change in mission structure it remains to be seen how much extra exploration can be done.

Using the same technology that built the Wii version of Resident Evil 4, Capcom is also aiming to be able to have at least 100 zombies on-screen at once, which seems like a small number compared to the many hundreds that appeared on-screen in the Xbox 360 version, but it will still be pushing the Wii pretty hard.  From what has been made available, the overall look and feel of Dead Rising seems to be intact (minus some of the detail of the 360 version).

The advantage of the Wii controls (and hopefully, Wii MotionPlus) is better aiming.  The motion controls also get some use when protagonist Frank West tries to shake off an attacking zombie.  It's simple and straight forward implementation could really make this accessible for the wider Wii audience.

I'm just hoping that sanity prevents the development team from plugging in any mini-games though a Survival mode of some sort would be awesome.

Capcom's estimated release date for Dead Rising: Chop Until You Drop is sometime in 2009.
