New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Old school, 2D Super Mario Bros. is something that is darn difficult to get tired of.  Even though the Mario franchise has grown considerably over the years, with its fair share of installments taking place in three dimensions, it’s still fun to do the classic stuff.  Nintendo certainly hasn’t lost sight of this, having released New Super Mario Bros. on the DS a while back.  Now they are doing it again for the Wii.

What will probably prove to be the most important addition to the game for this Wii rendition is support for four-player cooperative multiplayer.  Players will be able to choose from Mario, Luigi, and two different colored mushroom people to play as.  There are no differences in abilities between the characters, they just look different so that we can tell them apart.

After characters have been selected, players will be able to choose the level that they want to play, as opposed to progressing from level to level in a linear fashion.  When all is said and done, there should be around 80 playable levels for gamers to sink their teeth into in New Super Mario Bros.

For the most part, the game is controlled in a traditional manner, with

the controller held horizontally, using the direction, and face buttons, and occasionally giving the thing a shake to make one’s character spin in the air, for instance.  While much of the game is indeed cooperative, there are opportunities for people to be more competitive, as players are challenged to complete certain tasks during levels, such as collecting the most coins, so that they can be ranked at the end of a level.

New Super Mario Bros. did quite well for itself on the DS, and, assuming this new game plays reasonably similar to its portable counterpart, there’s little reason the Wii version can’t do just as well.  We’ll be able to find out when it is released toward the end of the year.
