Punch-Out!!

As an over the top boxing game on the NES, Punch-Out!! earned itself a lot of fans when it came out.  With wacky characters like King Hippo, Piston Honda, and Glass Joe, not to mention Mike Tyson, the game had a lot of personality, and the action manifested itself with a fast-paced, arcade styled sensibility.  Now, the game is getting remade and suped up for the Wii, which makes a lot of sense given that we’ve already seen one boxing game on the system via Wii Sports, so why not bring in the big guns?

While the boxing game that comes with Wii Sports allows players to flail their arms wildly, and somehow pull off a victory, Punch Out will require players to think more about how they’ll approach their fights.  There are only so many punches that Little Mac will be able to throw per second, so it’ll be important to watch for openings to take a few swings at an opponent.

By simply making punching movements with the Wii’s nunchuk controls, Little Mac will start throwing punches.  In order to do other movements, players will need to use the directional stick on the controller.   Holding up while punching will make Little Mac upper cut, will motioning left or right will make him dodge, and holding down will make him duck.  Interestingly, players will also be able to just use the Wii remote turned sideways, and control the game like its classic NES predecessor if they so choose.

It has been a solid 15 years since we last saw a Punch-Out!! game, so it’s nice to see it coming back, and taking advantage of the Wii’s unique control system.  Development is being handled by Next Level Games, who have also handled the Mario Strikers, so given the track record of the company, it looks like Punch-Out!! is in good hands.
