Looney Tunes: Duck DodgersStarring Daffy Duck
Attention gamers and evil-doers, prepare for DUCK DODGERS IN THE 24th AND A HALF CENTURY!!! It's been about 50 years since Warner BrothersÔ released one of my favorite cartoons – the Duck Dodgers cartoons featuring Daffy Duck. The original cartoon can still make me guffaw like I’m seeing it for the first time. Infogrames took what was best from the cartoon and incorporated it into a great game. You control the hero, Daffy, on an invasion behind enemy lines to capture "fuel atoms" that the nefarious Marvin the Martian requires to power his Earth Destroying Cannon. By capturing all of the atoms, Marvin will be unable to fire his cannon and the day is saved. Unfortunately, Marvin is prepared and has assembled a variety of villains and cut-throats to do his bidding, including Hassan the Mongol leader; Mugsie the crime boss; and the NRA-lovin’ Yosemite Sam. Each controls a planet, which you must search and collect all the atoms from while "laying the smack down" on these bosses. Fortunately for you, you're not alone – you have your speech-debilitated porcine sidekick (damn, I love my Thesaurus) the Space Cadet, Porky Pig. (He's there to provide valuable insights and control hints while stuttering out the punch lines.)

The game is very much in the same vein as Super Mario 64, with the third person rotating view as your visual experience. (We won’t even mention the parallels in the fact that both "stomp" their enemies.) For this game, the three dimensional view is handled well and the designers have managed to create some very challenging jumping and swimming levels that take full advantage of the generated worlds. The action is not limited to the 3rd person adventure gaming as the addition |

of the "Quack Mode," (where the game enters the 1st person shooter mode) gives gamers the opportunity to unload on someone with the disintegrating pistol. It certainly shows how the programmers went that extra mile to develop a well-rounded experience for the gamer. The game looks above average for the N64, but it’s a shame that the programmers didn't optimize the backgrounds with the RAM pak, it should have helped to rid the game of the boxy backgrounds and strange textures on some characters. The true treat of the game is the voice acting which really brings the characters alive (as if Mel Blanc was speaking for them) – the opening sequence featuring Daffy, Porky, and Marvin is truly awe-inspiring. The voice acting really works for Daffy as his intricate death sequences put Hamlet to shame and make you feel a little sadomasochistic for laughing so loud at his quips. The first time I heard Daffy say to me "You're despicable!" and hold up a little placard emblazoned with "Yipe!", I actually had soda come up my nose from laughing so hard. Don't even get me started on the "Yoinks and Away!" My only other complaint about the game is the strange learning curve – the first levels are straight forward and easy to get through, but quickly become extremely difficult with jumping or walking obstacles that just drive the gamer insane and require frequent repetition to pass. The detractions cannot take away the pleasure of this title. I admit having a truly fun time playing the game and even losing track of time controlling Daffy. This game is highly recommended for the young or the young at heart, and those who love morning cartoons or hold a soft spot in their hearts for Looney TuneÔ characters. - Tazman "What’s up,
