Blair Witch Volume II:The Legend of Coffin RockScore: 6.5 / 10
Creepy, scary games can be good fun. Silent Hill and the Resident Evil series have done a great job of leaving gamers on edge after a few rounds. Unfortunately the second in the series or PC games based on the Blair Witch Trilogy doesn’t bode nearly as well as these other great horror games. While it is creepy, and does have a solid story the mixed presentation and weak controls mar the experience.
The one thing that can really ruin a game are its controls, be it awkward button configurations or poor response. Coffin Rock definitely has poor response as your character, Lazarus, is very difficult to move around, clumsily bobbing around the screen, which can be particularly annoying if you’re engaged in combat. Adding to this problem are the fixed camera angles that make it exceedingly difficult to get your baring while trying to get through passageways, most notably doors. On top of this it is very difficult to aim firearms as there is only an extremely small red dot on the screen to indicate where Lazarus is pointing his gun and often it disappears, resulting in many wasted rounds trying to shoot enemies. Even more frustrating than the gameplay is the flow of the game, as it is inundated with cutscenes. The player is constantly hit with a stoppage in playing while they’re forced to watch more dialogue to progress the story. While the story itself is quite |

interesting this is a game, not a movie, and as such people should be doing a lot more playing and a lot less watching. Better voice acting would also have gone a long way in making the cutscenes more bearable. As it stands it can be very challenging to wait through these scenes instead of simple turning off the game and doing something else.

components lending to this. The sound effects are excellent with the whispering, incoherent voices of children in the background sometimes, to the eerie silence, or the sound of an enemy, but the player not knowing where it is. Aurally the game is fabulous. The same can’t be said about the visuals however, as it is a mixed bag. The characters and monsters are very plain, unappealing folk, partially because they suffer from the drab backwoods fashion of the late 1800s, partially because of their lack of detail. On the positive side, the environments have plenty of sharp detail, and the lighting effects and real time shadows work wonders for adding to the mood of the game. But all in all the visuals suffer. Coffin Rock is a game that is very hard to maintain an interest in. Despite the solid story and eerie atmosphere the poor controls and incredibly halted flow of the game cripple the experience horribly. - Mr. Nash
