Ripley's Believe it or Not!

Score as a group game: 8.9 out of 10

Score as a single-player game: 4.0 out of 10

For me, Ripley’s Believe it or Not conjures up images of freaky and bizarre events and people. Most of this comes direct from the old TV show hosted by Jack Palance, but some of it comes from an old trivia game I got when I was six. When Ripley’s Believe it or Not (RBN) booted up for the first time I felt that rush of nostalgia when I heard Jack’s voice. The feeling quickly died.

The graphics and sound are very smooth and the font is large enough. (Although I’d love to be able to increase it.) For Hypnotix, this kind of game is old hat. They know what they’re doing and it shows in how easy it is to start playing. Jack Palance introduces the game, asks you how many people are playing, what their names are and to choose a player icon, then vanishes. He doesn’t ask any of the ensuing questions, which is a major strike against RBN. The actor asking the questions (in a British accent) does an excellent job – his delivery and voice is clear and concise – but when Jack’s dangled in front of your ears you want more of him. The questions

themselves are interesting to say the least. It’s very difficult to tell the what’s true and what’s not, which is the whole point of the game. The fault with some of the questions is that they’re audio with only a final, "Which is it?" displayed as the question. If you aren’t paying attention, hard of hearing, or making snide comments about your fellow players, you’ll miss the question and be guessing blind.

Questions are of a bizarre nature. You’ll be asked things you’ve never heard of let alone thought possible. After playing for many hours I only had two repeat questions (and got it wrong both times). Each question is multiple choice except for the last one which is a reflex question, trying to match up the description a series of photos that get displayed. Each player (up to 4 can play) has a buzz-in button and can buzz in at any time. Even before the choices have been given you can buzz in, which means you really have to guess. There’s no way around this, so I’ll just say it – the single player game sucks. There isn't even a computer opponent to test yourself against. The only way to play this is with more than one player. It’s way more fun and interesting with people to play with. It also fully utilizes the various question types. For instance, one person buzzes in with what they think is the right answer. The other players then get the chance to "Believe" or "Don’t Believe," and the cash is awarded accordingly. (You’ll get dinged if you believe but it’s false.) The interface is simple. There’s no typing – just hit your buzz-in key then select a number – which facilitates four people at the keyboard. The more people playing the better.

Practicing by yourself on the single player mode is fine just don’t expect to have any fun. Ripley’s Believe it or Not is a group game to play with friends. . . Believe it . . . or not!
